Don Khong
POP 13,000
Less claustrophobic than islands Det and Khon thanks to its expanse (18km long, 8km
wide) and under development, Khong is a sleepy idyll where fishing nets dry in the sun,
the turquoise Mekong slips by and locals barely look up from their Beerlao to register
your arrival. It tends to be avoided by younger travellers and is good if you're seeking a
lower density of falang ; apart from its little town of Muang Khong, the island is largely
unpeopled. Essentially a one-street town, Muang Khong has some lovely hotels and guest-
houses in which to stay a few days, plus a couple of decent al fresco restaurants. Take a
sunset boat ride to Cambodian waters, read by the river, or hire a bike to explore the is-
land.
Sleeping & Eating
All of the following are in Muang Khong, on or just back from the riverbank along a
700m stretch. There are few dedicated restaurants worth tweeting about; guesthouses have
the best food, with Pon Arena ( Click here ) and Ratana leading the way. Most places serve
Don Khong's famous lòw-lów , which is often cited as the smoothest in the country.
You'll find all these guesthouses located in Muang Khong.
