by, but it's plenty popular by virtue of its reputation as a backpacker magnet. It's often
booked out if you walk in so try booking ahead. The en suite rooms out back are good
value.

( 031-214888; www.athena-pakse.com ; Rte 13; r incl breakfast US$60-90; ) Easily the
most modern and slick hotel in Pakse. The beds are marshmallowy delights, and dimming
inlaid ceiling lights let you illuminate them in many ways. The three deluxe rooms ratchet
up the luxury factor with humongous flat-screen TVs, bathrobes and big bathtubs, while
the refreshing pool is most welcome after a day out on dusty roads. It's about a 10-minute
walk from the tourist centre.

) This traditional-luxe hotel towering over central Pakse has a gorgeous lobby and
breezy corridors festooned with indigenous sculptures and textiles. The economy rooms
are dark and the standard rooms cramped, so upgrade to at least a superior, which brings
extras like flat-screen TVs, fancy soaps, designer furniture and Mekong views.
