1930, a major dig in a nearby village unearthed 200-million-year-old dinosaur fossils.
This enthusiastically run museum is an interesting place to divert yourself for an hour or
so. Savannakhet Province is home to five dinosaur sites.

oldie but goodie, fairy-lit Leena is something of a motel with kitsch decor in comfortable
peach-colored, clean rooms with tiled floors, hot-water showers, TVs and a pleasant
breakfast area where you can pick up wi-fi. The air-con rooms are bigger. There's also a
cafe.
Salsavan Guesthouse

This beautiful French villa
and ex-Thai consulate has all the makings of a boutique hotel. Rooms are large and atmo-
spherically old fashioned with wood floors, mosquito nets and deep-colored walls with
shuttered windows and balconies. That said, the en suites are unattractively Soviet and the
place feels like it's in need of invigoration. Outside there's a garden terrace.

English-speaking owner, a clean lobby and imaginatively tiled and French wallpapered
