This travellers' oasis is five minutes east of town and has a spectrum of rooms, from boxy
standards to those with elements of Indo-chic. The lodge's centrepiece is a leafy courtyard
with a nightly firepit, around which you can swap stories of the Loop. Seven new rooms
out back come with slate floors, flat-screen TVs and fridges.
There's also a natty cafe serving up Lao fare such as
làhp
, Western salads and various
juices.

Set in an old French
villa, Inthira, with its pretty facade, offers the most romantic digs in town. Its restaurant
fronts the old fountain, and its chic wine-hued rooms are a delight for weary travellers,
with exposed brick walls, rain showers, cable TV, dark-wood furniture, air-con and safety
deposit boxes. The best rooms face the street and have balconies.

Hotel Riveria
( 051-250000; Th Setthathirat; r US$58-75; )
With terrific views of Thailand
on one side and even more dramatic vistas of the jagged karsts on the other, this is very
much a family/businessperson's choice. Large rooms have king-size beds, TVs, fridges,
baths and international-style furniture. Downstairs, there's a decent restaurant with a
lovely buffet breakfast and egg station. Professional.
