TOP OF CHAPTER
Bokeo Province
The smallest province in the country - once a major artery on the infamous opium trail of
contraband, which was smuggled in and out of the Golden Triangle - these days Bokeo
Province is home to a flourishing ecotreasure known as the Gibbon Experience, based in
the rugged Bokeo Nature Reserve. Home to a rich biodiversity of large mammals, this
area offers great trekking, and you may come across a colourful cast of 34 different ethnic
groups.
Huay Xai
084 / POP 20,000
A US heroin processing plant was allegedly based here during the Secret War, however,
these days the only things trafficked through Huay Xai are travellers en route to Luang
Prabang. Separated from Thailand by the cocoa-brown Mekong River, it is for many their
first impression of Laos - don't worry, it gets better! The town has some welcoming trav-
eller guesthouses and tasty cafes, and by night its central drag dons fairy lights and fires
up roadside food vendors. Huay Xai is also the HQ of the now-fabled Gibbon Experience,
the most talked-about environmentally conscious jungle adventure in the country.
