Need to choose between Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi Neua? It's a tough call, but gen-
erally Nong Khiaw has better accommodation and dining, while Muong Ngoi Neua is
more rural and timeless with nearby trekking opportunities.
Sights & Activities
Such is the grandeur of the riverside views that you could happily linger all day just lazing
on your balcony or sitting at one of the better-placed restaurant shacks.
Numerous freelance guides offer a wide range of walks to Lao, Hmong and Khamu vil-
lages and to regional waterfalls. Prices are remarkably reasonable and some visits, such as
to the That Mok falls, involve boat rides.
Kayaking is a great way to appreciate the fabulous riverine scenery that stretches both
ways along the Nam Ou. Lao Youth Travel ( 030 514 0046; www.laoyouthtravel.com ;
7.30-10.30am & 1.30-6pm) has its own kayaks and is handily located where the boat-landing
path passes the two-storey Rainbow House.

Many guesthouses feature river views, shared cold-water bathrooms, hammocks and at-
tached family-run restaurants.
Ning Ning Guest House

the smartest place in the village, offering immaculate wooden bungalows with mosquito
nets, verandahs, en suite bathroom and bed linen, plus the walls are draped with ethnic
tapestries. There's a nice restaurant with riverfront views.
