HIKING
( 071-254481; www.white-elephant-adventures-laos.com ; Th Sisavangvong) White Elephant is
hailed for its relationships with remote Hmong and Khamu villages, allowing a deeper in-
sight into ethnic life . You can do this on a trek or by cycle in solid two- and three-day
tours. Look out for the BMW motorbike and communist flag.
Festivals & Events
The two most important annual events in Luang Prabang are Pii Mai (Lao or Lunar New
Year) in April, when the town is packed to the gills with locals armed with water pistols
(book accommodation well in advance), and Bun Awk Phansa (End of the Rains Retreat),
which sees boat races in October.
Sleeping
Digs vary from basic guesthouses to five-star hotels and achingly perfect boutique hotels.
The most atmospheric place to stay is undoubtedly on the peninsula.
Rates given here are for the high season (October to March). Prices briefly climb higher
for Pii Mai (mid-April) and Christmas, but typically fall at least 25% from May.
