BUS & SŎRNGTĂAOU
Buses use three different stations in Vientiane, all with some English-speaking staff. The
Northern Bus Station (Th Asiane) is exactly 9km northwest of the centre, and serves all points
north of Vang Vieng, including China and some buses to Vietnam.
The Southern Bus Station (Rte 13 South) , commonly known as Dong Dok Bus Station or
just khíw lot lák kâo (Km9 bus station), is 9km out of town and serves everywhere south.
Buses to Vietnam stop here.
The Talat Sao Bus Station is where desperately slow local buses depart for destina-
tions within Vientiane Province, including Vang Vieng, and some more distant destina-
tions, though for these you're better off going to the Northern or Southern stations. Inter-
national VIP buses to Thailand's Udon Thani (22,000K) leave here roughly every hour. A
VIP bus for Bangkok (248,000K) also leaves from here every day at 6pm.
For buses to China, contact Tong Li Bus Company ( 021-242657) at the Northern Bus
Station. For Vietnam, S.D.T ( 021-720175) . has buses leaving daily from the Southern Bus
Station: for Hanoi (220,000K, 24 hours) via Vinh (180,000K, 16 hours), and for Danang
(230,000K) via Hue (200,000K, 19 hours). On Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays they
leave at 6pm. For Ho Chi Minh City change at Danang.
