with liver pâté, veg and cream cheese, dripping with sweet chilli sauce). There's no
English-language sign here, but the stall is directly on the corner of Th Pangkham and Th
Samsenthai.

restful gem pipes classical music across its wood-floored space and travellers sit cross-
legged on cushions (leave yer shoes outside!). Open for lunch and dinner, look out for fa-
vourites such as tofu dumplings, stewed eggplant and sautéed salt pork. A little bit of zen
to take you from the bustle of the city.

Kobe steak - soaked in beer it's massaged daily for 30 days before it arrives impossibly
tenderised on your plate. At US$100 it's not cheap! There's also a carnivore's delight of
cutlets, sirloin, Luang Prabang sausage, slow cooked lamb, plus the challenge to eat a bur-
ger as big as your head. Seriously!

Drinking & Nightlife
The river plays host to a parade of American- style bars. Conveniently, two of the better
nightclubs are within walking distance of each other. Echo MAP GOOGLE MAP (
021-213570; Th Samsenthai; 8pm-1am) , at the Mercure Hotel, is pretty cool and is popular
with Vientiane's beautiful people. Just up the road, At Home MAP GOOGLE MAP (Th Luang
Prabang; 8pm-midnight) thumps with trance and house.

Khop Chai Deu
( 021-0251564; www.inthira.com ; Th Setthathirath) KCD has massively finessed its nocturnal
offerings - think low-lit interiors and a sophisticated drinks list, plus more activities than
any other bar, such as speed dating and women's arm wrestling. Upstairs on the 3rd floor
a new bar has opened; more South Beach, Miami than Vientiane, it's very slick.
