Set in an old French villa, Mandala is new and super-chic with lacquered granite
floors, flat-screen TVs and dark-wood furniture, which blend perfectly with the aesthetic
of its art deco lines. The four-poster beds are possibly the most comfortable in Laos.
There's also a natty Asian-fusion restaurant in the gardens.

This place exudes calm the moment you enter its centre-piece courtyard,
complete with sparkling pool and shaded by sugar palms and frangipani trees. Rooms fea-
ture hardwood floors, capacious bathrooms, couches, safety deposit boxes and step-in
mosquito nets. The staff are friendly, the breakfast and dinner fantastic; they alone merit
the journey here.
Eating
If you were looking to lose a few pounds in Vientiane, forget it. This is a gourmand's
heaven, and it's possible to eat your way round the globe from Japan to France - and just
about everywhere in between - in a vast selection of top-flight restaurants, as well as in-
formal cafes, juice bars and roadside vendors, who dish up delicious grilled fare.
