In-Depth Information
Around Kep
Near the town of Kompong Trach, 28km north of Kep, you'll find Wat Kiri Sela (
7am-6pm) , a Buddhist temple built at the foot of Phnom Kompong Trach , a dramatic karst
formation riddled with over 100 caverns and passageways. From the wat, an underground
passage leads to the centre of a fishbowl-like karst formation, surrounded by vine-draped
cliffs and open to the sky. Various stalactite-laden caves shelter reclining Buddhas and
miniature Buddhist shrines. There's major rock-climbing opportunities around here.
Friendly local kids with torches, eager to put their evening-school English to use, are
eager (overeager?) to serve as guides; make sure you tip them if you use them.
Getting There & Away
Kompong Trach makes an easy day trip from Kep or Kampot, or you can hop off the bus
on the way to/from Phnom Penh. To get to Wat Kiri Sela, take the dirt road opposite the
Acleda Bank for 2km.
