Mekong Blue

Treng Women's Development Centre, Mekong Blue is a silk-weaving centre on the out-
skirts of town where you can see the entire silk-making process, from rearing silkworms
to dyeing and hand-loom weaving. There is a small showroom on site with a selection of
exquisite silks on sale, all produced by impoverished and vulnerable weavers. The centre
is located about 4km east of town on the riverside road that continues under the bridge.

from Laos, Siem Reap or just about anywhere else. Also runs boat tours to the Lao border
via the resident dolphin pod (US$100/120 for two/four people).
Xplore-Asia ( 074-973456, 011 433836; www.xplore-cambodia.com ) Doles out brochures, book-
lets and advice, and tailors one- to several-day cycle-and-kayak combo tours along the
Mekong Discovery Trail, including kayaking with the dolphins. Rents out kayaks (US$10
per day), motorbikes (US$10 per day) and sturdy Trek mountain bikes (US$5 per day).
Tourist Information Centre MAP ( 074-210001; 8-11am & 2-7pm; ) Inconveniently loc-
ated near the new bridge, it's run by the ever-helpful Theany.
Getting There & Around
Express minibuses with guesthouse pick-ups as early as 4am are the quickest way to Ph-
nom Penh (US$10 to US$13, eight hours). Book through Riverside Guesthouse.
Phnom Penh Sorya ( 092 181805) has a 6.30am bus to Phnom Penh (40,000r, nine hours)
via Kratie (20,000r, three hours). Sorya's bus from Laos to Phnom Penh comes through
Stung Treng around 11.30am.
There is a comfortable tourist van to Ban Lung (US$6, two hours, 8am), with additional
morning trips in cramped local minibuses (15,000r, three hours) from the market.
Riverside Guesthouse does minivan trips to Siem Reap via the new highway to Preah
Vihear City when there's demand (US$25 per person). These will continue to cross the
Mekong by ferry until the new bridge to Thala Boravit is completed.
Riverside Guesthouse also rents out motorbikes (from US$8) and bicycles (US$1 to
US$2).
