In-Depth Information
trees - a fitting monument to the devastation he and his movement left behind. In the
middle of the lake, due east from the house, is a small brick structure, an outhouse and all
that remains of Pol Pot's residence in Anlong Veng.
The turn-off to Ta Mok's house is about 1km north of the roundabout in the centre of
town.
Ta Mok's Grave
From the turn-off to Ta Mok's house, driving a further 7km north takes you to Tumnup
Leu village, where a signposted right turn leads to Ta Mok's Angkorian-style mausoleum .
Locals come here to light incense and, in a bizarre local tradition, hope his spirit grants
them a winning lottery number.

HISTORIC SITE
Pol Pot's Cremation Site
(admission US$2) A few hundred metres before the Thai frontier, under a rusted corrugated-
iron roof, is the cremation site of Pol Pot, who was hastily burned in 1998 on a pile of old
tyres and rubbish - a fittingly inglorious end, perhaps. In the dry season you can continue
east from the border checkpoint along a rugged road to another residence of Ta Mok and,
beyond, former houses of Pol Pot and Khieu Samphan.
Sleeping & Eating
For most people Anlong Veng is an optional stop on the drive from Siem Reap to Prasat
Preah Vihear, an hour's drive to east. If you happen to get stuck here for a night, the
Monorom Guesthouse ( 065-690 0468; r with fan/air-con from US$6/15; ) , 200m north of
the Dove of Peace roundabout, has adequate if nondescript rooms, or try Bot Uddom Guest-
house ( 011 500507; r with fan/air-con from US$7.50/15;
) , a few hundred metres east of
the roundabout on the road to Preah Vihear.
Unsigned Sheang Hai Restaurant (NH67; mains US$2-6; 5am-9pm) , 50m north of the
roundabout on the east side of NH67, has the best food in the town centre.
Orientation
The town's focal point is the Dove of Peace roundabout. About 600m north of the round-
about, the NH67 crosses a bridge and continues 16km to the Thai border.
