Travelling Responsibly
Much of the Mekong region is extremely poor, so consider how you might put a little back into the countries
you visit. Staying longer, travelling further and avoiding package tours all help. On shorter stays, consider
spending money in local markets and in restaurants and shops that assist disadvantaged locals.
For tips on travelling responsibly while still having the trip of a lifetime, try the following websites:
Friends International ( www.friends-international.org ) Supports marginalised children and their families
across Southeast Asia and runs the global ChildSafe Network ( www.thinkchildsafe.org ) to encourage trav-
ellers to behave responsibly with children.
Mekong Responsible Tourism ( www.mekongresponsibletourism.org ) Runs a list of responsible tour oper-
ators and tours in the Mekong region, plus tips on travelling in ways that are culturally sensitive and benefit
local communities and the environment.
Ecotourism Laos ( www.ecotourismlaos.com ) Has comprehensive information on Laos' protected areas, in-
digenous groups and endangered species, plus a useful 'Do's and Don'ts' section for travelling in the
Mekong region.
