(Central Market; 6.30am-5.30pm) Often referred to as Central Market, this art-deco land-
mark resembles a Babylonian ziggurat. It houses an array of stalls selling jewellery, cloth-
ing and curios. The food section is enormous, with produce spilling onto the streets.

MARKET
( 6.30am-5.30pm) Housed in a sprawling mall-like space, this less-touristy market is the
place to come if you want to lose the legion of attentive remorque drivers. It is a complete
rabbit warren, selling everything you can think of and some things you can't.
Night Market
MAP
(Psar Reatrey; cnr St 108 & Sisowath Quay; 5-11pm Fri-Sun) A cooler alfresco version of Russi-
an Market, the Night Market mainly sells souvenirs, silk and knick-knacks. Bargain vigor-
ously, as prices can be on the high side.

Orientation
The riverfront Sisowath Quay, lined with myriad restaurants and a brand-new promenade,
is where most visitors gravitate. The city sprawls west from there. The main thorough-
fares, Siha-nouk Blvd and Norodom Blvd, intersect a few blocks west of the river at lotus-
flower-like Independence Monument, a useful landmark.

DANGERS & ANNOYANCES
Phnom Penh is not as dangerous as people imagine, but it is important to take care. Armed
robberies do sometimes occur, but statistically you would be very unlucky to be a victim.
More common is bag snatching (see the boxed text).
The riverfront area of Phnom Penh, particularly places with outdoor seating, attracts
many beggars, as do Psar Thmei and Russian Market. Generally, however, there is little in
the way of push and shove.
