Accommodation in Phnom Penh, as in the rest of the country, is terrific value no matter
your budget and there are hundreds of guesthouses and hotels to choose from.
The traditional backpacker area around Boeng Kak ('The Lake') all but died when the
lake was filled in with sand in 2011. Four miniature Khao San Rd backpacker colonies
have emerged in its wake:
» St 172, between St 19 and St 13 (the most popular area);
» St 258 near the riverfront;
» The Psar O Russei area west of busy Monivong Blvd; and
» St 278 (aka 'Golden St') in the trendy Boeng Keng Kang (BKK) district south of Independence Monu-
ment.
Central Phnom Penh North
Many travellers target the riverfront, but hotels along the river can be noisy and/or win-
dowless. A few superb options exist at the top end, but worthwhile pickings are much
