LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
AROUND DALAT
Curtis King is a Dalat-based musician and restaurant/hotel owner who's been visiting the city since
2001. He filled us in on his favourite experiences in and around Dalat.
Best Road Trips There are basically six different routes leading out of Dalat, all spectacular in their
own way, in particular the roads heading to the coast - the road to Nha Trang is truly stunning.
Best Waterfalls Dalat and the surrounding areas are home to some of the country's most beautiful wa-
terfalls. Slightly off the beaten path, Elephant Falls and Tiger Den Falls are highly impressive, or head
to those along Hwy 20.
Best Train Experiences Being a big railway fan, it was the Dalat train station and the local tourist
train that really got my attention when I first came here in 2001. The train ride to Trai Mat, although it
only takes about 30 minutes, is so evocative of colonial times. Then stop by the Dalat Train Cafe for a
drink in a classic railway carriage.

The Hangout

(71 Ð Truong Cong Dinh; 11am-11pm; ) Popular hangout for some of Dalat's Easy Riders,
as well as visiting backpackers, with a relaxed vibe and a popular pool table. The owner is
an excellent source of local information.
BAR
LIVE MUSIC
Escape Bar
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Basement, Blue Moon Hotel, 4 Ð Phan Boi Chau; 4pm-midnight; ) Outstanding live-music
bar, owned by blues guitarist Curtis King, who performs here most nights with a rotating
band (from 9pm). Sunday is a jam session. The bar's decor, all 1970s chic and 'groovy
baby' furnishings, suits the sonics perfectly.
Shopping
Hoa Binh Square and the market building adjacent to it are the places to purchase ethnic
handicrafts, including Lat rush baskets that roll up when empty. Coffee is another smart
purchase.
