Accommodation
The Mekong region has something for everyone - from dives to the divine - and we cover them all. Although
costs vary slightly across the region, accommodation in the Mekong region is almost always great value, es-
pecially compared with the West.
Important points to note:
» We've quoted prices in the local currency or US dollars based on the preferred currency of the particular
property.
» Accommodation prices quoted are high season.
» Expect low-season discounts of up to 50% in touristy areas.
» Some hotels add 25% to high-season prices over Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year (Tet in Viet-
nam); advance reservations are strongly recommended during these times.
» Assume that a fan will be provided if there is no air-con.
» Most top-end hotels levy a tax of 10% and a service charge of 5%, displayed as ++ ('plus plus') on the bill.
» Power outages are common in some towns; higher-end hotels will be equipped with generators.
» Many hotels post a small sign warning guests not to leave cameras, money, passports and other valuables in
the room. Although there's no reason to be too paranoid, it's best to heed this warning. Higher-end hotels
have safety boxes.
Camping
With the exception of the national parks in Thailand and some high-end experiences in Cambodia, Laos and
Vietnam, the opportunities for general camping are limited.
