The Mekong region is not known as Indochina for nothing. Geographically it is the
land in between China and India. China has shaped the destiny of Vietnam and con-
tinues to cast a shadow over the Mekong region. India exported its great religions,
language, culture and sculpture to Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. With a millennium
of influence from two of the world's great civilisations, it is hardly surprising to find
such a dynamic variety of culture in the Mekong region today.
Around 18 million Khmers live in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam.
