1802
Emperor Gia Long takes the throne to reign over a united Vietnam for the first time in dec-
ades, and the Nguyen dynasty is born, ruling until 1945.
1834
The Vietnamese take control of much of Cambodia during the reign of Emperor Minh
Mang and begin a slow revolution to 'teach the barbarians their customs'.
1864
The French force Cambodia into a Treaty of Protectorate, which ironically does prevent the
small kingdom being wiped off the map by its more powerful neighbours, Thailand and Vi-
etnam.
1883
The French impose the Treaty of Protectorate on the Vietnamese, bringing together Tonkin
in the north, Annam in the centre and Cochinchina in the south, marking the start of 70
years of colonial control.
1893
France gains sovereignty over all Lao territories east of the Mekong, thus consolidating its
control over the Mekong region as part of its colony of Indochina.
1907
French authorities negotiate the return of Siem Reap, Battambang and Preah Vihear to
Cambodia, under Siamese control since 1794; Laos loses out as territory to the west of the
Mekong is conceded in the deal.
1930
Ho Chi Minh establishes the Indochinese Communist Party; it splits into three national
communist forces - the Viet Minh in Vietnam, the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia and the
Pathet Lao in Laos.
1939
Following a nationalist coup by a pro-fascist military leadership, Siam changes its name to
Thailand in an effort to cement control of the Thai peoples in the Mekong region, choosing
to side with Japan in WWII.
