There has been little work in hemp that
applies the recent advances in biotechnology.
There has been no attempt to create trans-
genic hemp (GMO, 'genetically modified
organism').

tion programme for commercial seed stock
must be developed that is capable of sup-
porting the large-scale production of a given
variety.
All breeders will be conscious of the
problems posed to growers by each variety.
In particular, they will be aware of the need to
reproduce genetic material without it engen-
dering a higher economic cost compared with
other varieties.
The grower will need to consider how to:

Production of stock seed
The creation of a crop variety is only one of
a number of stages permitting farmers to
improve the genetics of their crop. Once
realized, it is necessary to institute a pro-
gramme that will preserve the variety, includ-
ing the production of stock seed that remains
permit the variety to express itself through
a high quality of stock seed
