from 132 ha (325 acres) in 2009 to 372 ha
(919 acres) in 2010, an increase of about
283%. In Quebec, the area under commercial
hemp production increased more than three-
fold to 321 ha (793 acres) in 2010 over that
in 2009. The only province to report a
decrease in hemp area in 2010 was British
Columbia, from 84 ha (207 acres) in 2009
to 64 ha (158 acres) in 2010. No hemp was
grown in the Atlantic Provinces and the
Yukon Territories in 2010. Table 20.1 pro-
vides data on commercial hemp production
in Alberta and Canada from 1998 to 2010.
Tables 20.2 and 20.3 provide hemp produc-
tion in Canada by provinces from 1998 to
2010 in hectares and acres ( http://www1.
agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/
all/econ9631).
Unlike the European Union, where most
of the crop produced is destined for fibre pro-
duction, the majority of Canadian hemp is pro-
duced to meet the growing demand for hemp
as a foodstuff in the USA, where it is used as a
nutraceutical, as well as in the manufacture of
certain cosmetic products such as soap and
shampoo.
A recent study in the USA found that the
sale of hemp-based foodstuffs had increased
by 60% since 2003 (Chapter 16). The net
total amount of sales is actually estimated at
US$12 million per annum for foodstuffs
and US$50 million for cosmetic products.
