In-Depth Information
Fig. 18.3. Cat litter made from granules of hemp
powder.
This property is relied upon for the pro-
duction of small granules, which are sold as lit-
ter for cats and other small mammals.
The granular form allows the powder to
absorb animal urine and excrement, as well as
any associated odours. It is therefore popular
as cat litter (Fig. 18.3). Cleaning of the litter
tray is easy as the granules compact down after
becoming soiled. As such, they can be used as
a fertilizer or composted down. Only the soiled
part of the litter needs to be replaced, putting
an end to the daily litter duty.
Fig. 18.2. A comfortable hemp bed.
This bedding absorbs urine and faeces and
is particularly good at capturing odours.
Bedding need only be changed on a weekly
basis at most.

Bedding for Cattle
When examining the physical constituents of
hemp powder, it was observed that its ability to
absorb water was very high: approximately
350%.
Straw powder in its pulverised form can also
be used as bedding for heavier animals. It is
used in cattle sheds as an alternative to barley
or wheat straw.
