Active Pursuits
Bondi's Let's Go Surfing ( CLICK HERE ) offers surfing lessons for kids aged seven to 16 -
but watch out, you may find that your offspring are suddenly much cooler than you are.
Bike tours are another good way to expend excess energy and prise the teens away from
the iPad; try Bike Buffs ( CLICK HERE ), Bonza Bike Tours ( CLICK HERE ) or Manly Bike
Tours ( CLICK HERE ). Otherwise you can hire bikes (kids' bikes are widely available) and
lead your own pack around Centennial Park ( CLICK HERE ) or Sydney Olympic Park ( CLICK
HERE ) .
Sydney Harbour Kayaks ( CLICK HERE ) welcomes fit 12-year-olds to its tours, as long as
they're accompanied by an adult.
Wet-Weather Lifelines
The museum of most obvious interest to youngsters is Ultimo's science and technology -
focused Powerhouse Museum ( CLICK HERE ). There are plenty of hands-on experiments to
partake in, trains and big chunks of machinery for budding engineers, and an interactive
Wiggles exhibition on the bottom floor (watch out for the ear worms!).
If the thought of dragging Johnny around an art gallery fills you with dread, you may be
surprised by how child-friendly the Art Gallery of NSW ( CLICK HERE ) is. Its Gallery Kids
program includes free shows on Sundays, tailored discovery trails and self-guided, child-
focused iPod tours. You can even book a Tour for Tots.
Twelve-year-old girls are likely to be quite distracted by Rihanna and Lady Gaga at
Madame Tussauds ( CLICK HERE ), giving mum (or dad) the opportunity to surreptiously
siddle up to Hugh Jackman. Directly next door, the Sydney Aquarium ( CLICK HERE ) is a
fascinating place to fill a few hours finding Nemo, sea dragons, disco-lit jellyfish,
dugongs, and gargantuan rays and sharks.
