In-Depth Information
With boundless natural attractions, a climate favouring out-
door activities and a laid-back inclination, Sydney is a top
spot for kids. In summer there are plenty of beaches to keep
everyone happy, and when it rains, there are many indoor
institutions geared to the junior tourist.
Attitudes
Australians are generally tolerant towards children, and while they may not be fawned
over as much as in places like Italy or Vietnam, they're not likely to receive a frosty re-
ception either. Most cafes and restaurants are welcoming of well-supervised children, and
many have high chairs and special children's menus.
Parents' rooms are the norm in larger shopping centres, offering a discreet space to
change a nappy or breastfeed. Most Sydneysiders are relaxed about mothers breastfeeding
in public but some continue to disapprove of the practice.
The only place you may come across a blanket ban on children is in some of the quieter
B&Bs and boutique hotels.
Beaches
The calm waters of Sydney's harbour beaches are great for kids to splash about in. If
you're particularly paranoid about sharks, head to the netted areas at Redleaf Pool, Shark
Beach, Balmoral and Manly Cove. But don't feel like you need to stick to the harbour
beaches. Most of Sydney's surf beaches have free saltwater pools, meaning that dad can
paddle about with the toddlers while mum goes body-surfing.
Parks & Wildlife
Sydney's not short on places to let the kids off the leash. Right in the middle of the city,
Darling Harbour's Tumbalong Park ( CLICK HERE ) has one of Sydney's best playgrounds.
Once you're done you can hitch a ride on the road train ( CLICK HERE ) to Wild Life Sydney
