Hire
Car-rental prices vary depending on season and demand. Read the small print to check age
restrictions, exactly what your insurance covers and where you can take the car (dirt roads
are sometimes off limits).
The big players have airport desks and city offices (mostly around William St). The
Yellow Pages lists other local car-hire companies, some specialising in renting near-
wrecks at rock-bottom prices - study the fine print to ensure you're not being lumped with
a lemon.

The National Roads & Motorists Association (NRMA; 132 132; www.nrma.com.au ; 74 King St;
9am-5pm Mon-Fri, 9.30am-12.30pm Sat; Wynyard) provides 24-hour emergency roadside as-
sistance, maps, travel advice, insurance and accommodation discounts. It has reciprocal
arrangements with similar organisations interstate and overseas (bring proof of member-
ship).
Taxi
Taxis are easy to flag down in the city and the inner suburbs, except for at 'changeover'
times (3pm and 3am). Taxis are metered and drivers won't usually rip you off - but don't
expect them to know how to get to where you're going! If they're unsure, ask them to turn
off the meter while they check the map.
