SURF LIFESAVING
Surf lifesaving originated in Sydney, although red-and-yellow-capped volunteer lifesavers
have since assumed iconic status across Australia. Despite the macho image, many
lifesavers are women, and a contingent of gay and lesbian lifesavers march in the Sydney
Mardi Gras Parade.
At summer surf carnivals all along the coast you can see these dedicated athletes wedge
their speedos up their butt cracks and launch their surf boats (butt cheeks grip the seats bet-
ter than speedos, apparently). Ask a local surf lifesaving club for dates, or contact Surf Life
Saving Australia ( www.sls.com.au ) for info.
