In-Depth Information
Historic buildings that have been redeveloped for new uses with effect include the Mint
( CLICK HERE ) and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music ( CLICK HERE ) on Macquarie St, the
Customs House ( CLICK HERE ) at Circular Quay, and the wharves at Walsh Bay - all great
examples of how thoughtful and sympathetic contemporary design can inject new life and
energy into an area.
The other defining event that cemented Sydney architecture's place on the world map
was the 2000 Olympic Games. Many of the buildings and infrastructure developed around
Homebush Bay, where the Games were based, were world class.
At the time of writing, major new buildings by internationally acclaimed architects Jean
Nouvel, Sir Norman Foster and Frank Gehry were being raised in Ultimo and Chippend-
ale, at the southern end of the city.
