At many restaurants, but particularly Asian, Middle Eastern and Indian restaurants,
sharing dishes is the norm (unless you're the only vegetarian). At European-style restaur-
ants many Sydneysiders stop at two courses, only ordering an entrée (Americans take
note: this is the starter served before the main course, not the main course, which is called
a 'main') or dessert on special occasions (or when the boss is paying).
When it comes to the pointy end of the night, there's usually a discussion as to whether
to split the bill or pay for your own. Splitting is common, but if you've knocked back the
crayfish and a bottle of Dom Perignon you'd better shell out some extra. Unlike in some
cultures, there's no expectation that the person doing the inviting will pay the whole bill.
Even if you're out on a date, women shouldn't expect that their meal will be bought for
them. Gender inequality is soooo last millennium.
VEGETARIANS & VEGANS
Sydney is great for herbivores. Unless you wander into a steak house by mistake, vegetarians should have no
trouble finding satisfying choices on most menus. Some leading restaurants offer separate vegetarian menus; at
Tetsuya's and the Bathers' Pavilion these stretch to multiple-course degustation.
At Asian eateries it pays to ask whether the vegetable dishes are cooked with oyster or fish sauce - they'll
usually be happy to make soy-based substitutions. Many of the more established restaurants such as Thai
Pothong in Newtown specifically mark strictly vegetarian options on the menu. Southeast Asian vegetarian
dishes are usually a good option for vegans also, but again, it pays to check.
The more socially progressive suburbs such as Newtown and Glebe have the widest range of veggie options.
Also worth checking out is the cluster of mainly vegetarian South Indian restaurants on Cleveland St, Surry
Hills, between Crown and Bourke Sts.
