ADVANCE AUSTRALIAN FARE
Australia is blessed with brilliant produce from farms and fisheries across the nation. The
tropical north provides pineapples, mangoes and even winter strawberries, while cooler
southern climes lend themselves to fine wines and cheeses. These come together in a fresh,
flavoursome, multicultural collision on dining tables across Sydney.
The nearest wine-growing region to Sydney is the Hunter Valley, 150km north of the city. It's
the oldest wine region in Australia, with the first vines planted here in 1831. Semillon, shiraz
and, more recently, chardonnay are the specialities, with more than 100 vineyards blanketing
the valley slopes.
It's through food that the last lingering limitations of colonial Australia are being dis-
solved. These days Sharon and Darren from Rooty Hill are just as likely to head out for
Thai, Vietnamese or Lebanese as they are for fish and chips or a roast.
