( 9320 3888; www.marinerscourt.com.au ; 44-50 McElhone St; r $135-155; Kings Cross) A tucked-away
treasure, this shipshape port-in-a-storm won't be the flashest place you'll stay in Sydney
(the vibe is kinda 1994), but it offers that rare combination of location, price and a bit of
elbow room. All rooms have courtyards or balconies, some with leafy outlooks. Good
wheelchair access.

( 9357 2211; www.omalleyshotel.com.au ; 228 William St; r $89-139; ; Kings Cross) This raucous
Irish pub has 15 simple rooms upstairs (all with private bathrooms and TVs), which are
surprisingly quiet, given the William St traffic and nightly twiddle-dee-dee live music
downstairs. The two harbour-view rooms are winners; one has a full kitchen.

( 9380 2922; www.elephantbackpacker.com.au ; 50 Sir John Young Cres; dm $24-28, r $90; ; St
James) Supremely grungy but not without charm, this 1892-built building has an awesome
roof terrace that floats you up into the city lights. It's a huge place (250 beds), but the ceil-
ings are high and the rooms airy - you'll never feel like you're stuffed into someone else's
backpack. The downside? Peeling paint, disinterested staff and traffic noise.

Kathryn, this grandiose 1888 Victorian terrace at the top end of ooh-la-la Queen St has
just two rooms. Dotted with antiques, the rooms are tastefully decorated in cream and
white; choose between the en suite attic room or the 1st-floor room with a balcony over-
looking the street.

travellers, this well-managed 64-room hotel has simple but comfortable rooms in a handy
location on the Paddington-Darlinghurst border. There's heavy-duty triple-glazing on the
Oxford St frontage, while the rear rooms face a quiet lane. The brick-paved central court-
yard has a small solar-heated pool.
