TARA$$
town)
You could imagine Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler trading insults beneath the high
ceilings of this 1886 mansion, if it weren't for the eclectic art scattered about and the
steady stream of traffic outside. Frankly, my dear, you might give a damn that only one of
the four bedrooms has an en suite, but that's all part of the period charm.
GLEBE POINT YHA$
and less uptight than some YHAs, this chilled-out, brightly painted hostel has decent facil-
ities, plenty of organised activities and simple, clean rooms with sinks. The main lure for
party people is the rooftop terrace with its barbecue nights, speed-dating extravaganzas
and salsa showdowns.

Newtown)
This enduring motel-like hostel offers a broader experience than most backpacker
joints, with travellers, touring rock bands and urbanites of all persuasions lobbing up on
the doorstep. Rooms come with or without bathrooms, and encircle a central solar-heated
pool.
ALISHAN INTERNATIONAL GUEST HOUSE $$
stantial Victorian house in the centre of Glebe, the Alishan (an area of Taiwan, don't you
know) is clean, quiet and well run, with spacious communal areas including a modern kit-
chen and a garden with a barbecue. All rooms have TVs and fridges, although some of the
cheapies share bathrooms.
