In-Depth Information
(65 Katoomba St; mains $10-17; breakfast & lunch) This heritage-listed 1916 cafe is Katoomba's
undisputed art deco masterpiece, filled with dark wood and classical reliefs. It's not one of
Katoomba's better cafes, but sampling handmade chocolates in its salubrious surrounds is
a compulsory Blue Mountains experience (Bob Dylan and Ginger Rogers both seemed to
enjoy themselves). Wander through to the Great Gatsby -esque mirrored cocktail bar at
the rear.
MT VICTORIA
OFFLINE MAP
With its isolated village vibe, National Trust-classified Mt Victoria was once more influ-
ential than Katoomba. At 1043m, it's the highest town in the mountains. Crisp air,
solitude, towering foliage and historic buildings are what bring you here.

MEGALONG VALLEY

OFFLINE MAP
(Megalong Valley Rd) The only Blue Mountains gorge you can drive into, Megalong Valley is a
straw-coloured slice of rural Australia - a real departure from the quasi suburbs strung
along the ridge line. A 15km road snakes down from Blackheath through pockets of rain-
forest; it's mostly well-surfaced, but gets rougher towards the end.
En route, the 600m Coachwood Glen Nature Trail OFFLINE MAP features dripping fern
dells, stands of mountain ash and sun-stained sandstone cliffs.
RED HANDS CAVE

Hands Cave, an Aboriginal shelter with hand stencils on the walls dating to between 500
and 1600 years ago. It's an easy, 7km return walk southwest of the Glenbrook Visitor
Centre (
