SHOPPING
As well as three of Sydney's premier shopping strips - Oxford St and William St in Paddington (fashion and home-
wares) and Queen St in Woollahra (antiques and fashion) - this area also secretes dozens of commercial art galler-
ies in its back streets.
Paddington
PADDINGTON MARKETS
perience, these quirky, long-running markets turn Saturdays in Paddington into pandemoni-
um. Originating in the 1970s, Paddington Markets were a beacon for larrikin artists and ar-
tisans, punks, skinheads, patchouli-scented hippies and fledgling fashion designers. It's a
tad more mainstream now, but still worth checking out for its new and vintage clothing,
creative crafts, jewellery, food, palm reading and holistic treatments.
MARKET
ARIEL
and students roam Ariel's aisles late into the night. 'Underculture' is the thrust here -
glossy art, film, fashion and design books, along with kids' books, travel guides and a
queer-lit section.
BOOKS
CORNER SHOP
stocked with unique and original foreign goodies like stylish jeans, cosy turtlenecks and
wispy things that go 'slink' in the night. There's a healthy mix of casual and high end, with
some jewellery for good measure.
CLOTHING
ANDREW MCDONALD
