EATING
This conservative enclave has traditionally offered good eating that shies away from the aggressively modern tend-
encies of its neighbours - reliable places where the just-so steak paired with the perfect wine is done to perfection
and the service is well-mannered to match. Lately a few rogue operators have moved in, shaking things up with
their hip ways and trendy food.

( 9362 1999; www.fourinhand.com.au ; 105 Sutherland St; mains $38; lunch & dinner Tue-Sun; Edgecliff)
You can't go far in Paddington without tripping over a beautiful old pub with amazing
food. This is the best of them, famous for its slow-cooked and nose-to-tail meat dishes, al-
though it also offers fabulously fresh seafood dishes and a delectable array of desserts. The
bar menu (mains $20 to $23) is a more affordable option.

NEILD AVENUE$$$

( www.idrb.com ; 10 Neild Ave; mains $35-42; lunch Fri-Sun, dinner daily; Edgecliff) Known for its coal-
grilled meats, unusual grains, no-bookings policy and lengthy waits for tables, this uberhip,
warehouse-filling restaurant is Sydney at its look-at-me best. Despite its 'dude food' re-
pute, most of the clientele seem to have teetered straight out of Sex & the City central cast-
ing. The food's excellent and the vibe beyond buzzy.
SONOMA$

( www.sonoma.com.au ; 241 Glenmore Rd; mains $10-16; 7am-4pm; 389) 'Artisan sourdough' is the
speciality of this mini chain of bakery cafes, and the toast with ricotta and the sourdough
sandwiches are suitably impressive. The popular Paddington branch offers a tasty $7 'cof-
fee and pastry' deal. There are also branches in Glebe and Bondi.
