DRINKING & NIGHTLIFE
Sydney's main hipster haven, Surry Hills has long been known for its grungy live-music pubs, but recently many
have been converted into chic bar-restaurants. Meanwhile Darlinghurst's famed Oxford St gay strip has been
swamped by trashy bogan clubs. But dry your eyes: these neighbourhoods still contain some of Sydney's best
drinking spots. You just have to look harder to find them. The 'small bar' phenomenon has taken off here, with
many of Sydney's best lurking down the most unlikely lanes.
Surry Hills
BERESFORD HOTEL
Beresford (circa 1870) has turned into a superslick architectural tractor beam designed to
lure the beautiful people. And it works! The crowd will make you feel either inadequate or
right at home, depending on how the mirror is treating you. There's a vast new beer garden,
and upstairs is a schmick live-music/club space.

The Cricketers, with its cruisy, cosy vibe, is a favourite
haunt of arts students, turntable fans and locals of all persuasions. It's ace for a beer any
time, and there are open fires for when you need warming up.

THE WINERY
in the shady grounds of a historic water reservoir, this wine bar serves dozens of wines by
the glass to the swankier sector of Surry Hills. Sit for a while and you'll notice all kinds of
kitsch touches lurking in the greenery: garden gnomes, upside-down parrots, iron koalas.

Tio likes tequila. Heaps of different
