In-Depth Information
work dummies are just as popular now as when the eponymous madame lugged her
macabre haul of French revolution death masks to London in 1803. I mean, where else do
mere mortals get to strike a pose with Hugh Jackman and cosy up to Kylie?
TUMBALONG PARK

( Town Hall) Flanked by the new Darling Walk development, this grassy circle on Darling
Harbour's southern rump is set up for family fun. Sunbakers and frisbee-throwers occupy
the lawns; tourists dunk their feet in fountains on hot summer afternoons. There's also an
excellent children's playground with a rubber floor (in case the kids don't bounce) and a
21m flying fox.

COCKLE BAY WHARF
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.cocklebaywharf.com ; Town Hall) The first vaguely tasteful development in Darling Har-
bour, Cockle Bay Wharf occupies the harbour's cityside frontage as far as Pyrmont
Bridge. Its sharp, contemporary angles are softened by the use of timber and whimsical
sculptures (we particularly like the jaunty dancing storks).
NOTABLE BUILDING
Housing upmarket restaurants and bars, Cockle Bay helped yank Darling Harbour out
of the financial mire in the 1990s. Sydney's megaclub Home set a new standard for stylish
clubbing and bucked the colonial trend by spawning an offshoot in London.
KING STREET WHARF

( www.ksw.com.au ; Lime St; Wynyard) Cockle Bay Wharf in ultramodern metal drag, the
$800-million King St Wharf continues the Darling Harbour precinct north beyond Pyr-
mont Bridge. All the plush apartments are sold and the office space leased out, but you
can still get a sniff of the high life at the waterfront bars and restaurants.

HARBOURSIDE
SHOPPING CENTRE
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.harbourside.com.au ; Darling Dr; 10am-9pm; Convention) The first major Darling Harbour
development, Harbourside shopping centre is like that nightclub guy still wearing a pirate
shirt and an unreconstructed mullet; its 1980s stylings are no match for the chic construc-
tions loitering on the other side of the harbour. Their tagline insists that 'Harbourside is
Happening', but we're not convinced.
