In-Depth Information
Duration One hour
Start in the lofty main concourse of
Central station . Take the George St exit, turn left and walk through the
small park down to
Railway Square , with its DNA strand towers. Cross Pitt St and head onto George St.
Step off Sydney's main drag into the calming 1845 sandstone Christ Church St Lawrence . Check the
thickness of your moral fibre before George St lures you into a saucy stew of sex clubs and porn shops.
Respite comes in the form of the elaborate Victoriana of the Haymarket library , St Andrew's
Cathedral , Town Hall and the Queen Victoria Building . Walk through the QVB and duck right into
Market St. On your right is the extraordinarily extravagant
State Theatre ; stop to scan the foyer.
Trundle past the macrospindle of
Sydney Tower and into verdant
Hyde Park . As you cut across,
check out the giant chessboard and the splendiferous fountain.
Across College St, skateboarders careen around the sturdily buttressed
St Mary's Cathedral . Curve north
from here around the top of Hyde Park under the watchful gaze of
Prince Albert , then angle right into
Macquarie St.
Governor Lachlan Macquarie commissioned convicted forger Francis Greenway to design this illustrious strip
in the early 19th century. Greenway's
Hyde Park Barracks and
St James' Church guard the south
end. In quick succession on the right as you continue north are the
Mint ,
Sydney Hospital ,
Parlia-
ment House and the
State Library of NSW .
Cross the road and head into Martin Place . Roam through the stately foyers and dodge the skateboarders
along this grand pedestrian mall. Channel Seven news is filmed live behind the glass of the Colonial Centre, on
the right past Elizabeth St.

peatedly slated for demolition before it was restored in the mid-1980s. Occupying an en-
tire city block on the site of the city's first markets, the QVB is a Venetian Romanesque
temple to the gods of retail.
