In-Depth Information
The $75,000 Archibald Prize for portraiture is the one that garners the most attention,
with its lure of celebrity subjects. It's so popular that it's generated three spin-offs: the
Salon des Refusés at the SH Ervin Gallery; the highly irreverant Bald Archies; and the
Packing Room Prize (judged by the guys who unload the crates, and generally echoing the
public's preference for a famous face, realistically drawn).
The $35,000 Wynne Prize for landscape painting or figure sculpture and the $30,000
Sulman Prize for subject or mural painting don't usually cause as much consternation.
Neither does the Artexpress exhibition of the year's best school student art, usually held in
March and April (admission free).
Gallery Kids
Junior art-lovers can take a free self-guided iPod tour, follow tailored trails and attend free
performances (2.30pm Sundays). Tours for Tots are held on certain Tuesdays ($20).
