( 9247 5500; www.theargylerocks.com ; 18 Argyle St; Circular Quay) This mammoth conglomera-
tion of five bars is spread through the historic sandstone Argyle Stores buildings, with
everything from a cobblestone courtyard to underground cellars resonating with DJs. The
decor ranges from rococo couches to white extruded plastic tables, all offset with kooky
chandeliers and moody lighting. Great bar food, too.

( 9250 6000; www.shangri-la.com ; L36, 176 Cumberland St; 5pm-midnight Mon-Thu, to 1am Fri & Sat, to
11pm Sun; Circular Quay) The drinks may be pricey, but it's well worth heading up to the
top of the Shangri-La hotel for the views, which seem to stretch all the way to New Zeal-
and. The dress code is officially 'smart casual', but err on the side of smart if you can't
handle rejection.

AUSTRALIAN HOTEL

( www.australianheritagehotel.com ; 100 Cumberland St; Circular Quay) Not only is this pub architec-
turally notable (c1913), it also boasts a bonza selection of fair dinkum Ocker beer and
wine. Keeping with the antipodean theme, the kitchen fires up pizzas topped with
kangaroo and saltwater crocodile ($17 to $26).

FORTUNE OF WAR

things, some of the original punters, too. There's live music on Friday and Saturday nights
from 8pm and on weekend afternoons from 2pm.
