In-Depth Information
Sales Taxes
Sales taxes are included in the advertised price. Apart from the 10% goods and services
tax (GST), the only other sales duties are on things such as alcohol and tobacco, which are
best bought at duty-free shops, such as those at the airport. The GST-tourist refund
scheme ( CLICK HERE ) has mostly replaced traditional duty-free shopping.
NEED TO KNOW
Opening Hours
As a very general rule, shop opening hours are as follows:
» 9.30am-6pm Monday -Wednesday, Friday and Saturday
» 9.30am-9pm Thursday
» 11am-5pm Sunday
Bargaining & Sales
Haggling isn't part of Australia's commercial culture, though you could try at some of the grungier markets
around the city, or if you're buying in bulk. Big-store sales usually happen in early January and July.
Warranties
Under local law, all purchases (including secondhand items) have an implied warranty that the goods are of
merchantable quality (unless the customer is informed otherwise), are fit for the purpose supplied, and match
the sample or description provided. If this is not the case, you are legally entitled to a refund.
Many suppliers (particularly of electrical goods) offer written warranties (guarantees) for fixed terms.
Check that they apply worldwide and include service in your home country.
