Tourist towns are well stocked with English speakers, though bus drivers, market vendors
and taxi drivers are less competent so it helps to know some basics.
Thailand has its own script. Street signs are always transliterated into English, but there
is no standard system so spellings vary widely. Not all letters are pronounced as they ap-
pear ('Ph' is an aspirated 'p' not an 'f').
