If you're itching to get out of the capital city, but don't have a lot of time, consider a day
trip to one of the neighbouring towns and provinces. On Bangkok's doorstep are all of
Thailand's provincial charms - you don't have to go far to find ancient religious monu-
ments, floating markets, architectural treasures and laid-back fishing villages.

Ko Kret
One of the easiest escapes from Bangkok is to Ko Kret, an artificial island that is the result
of dredging a canal in a sharp bend in Mae Nam Chao Praya. The island is home to one of
Thailand's oldest settlements of Mon people, who were the dominant culture in central
Thailand between the 6th and 10th centuries AD.
