In-Depth Information
Investigations of responses of the lysosomal-vacuolar system to environmental stressors
indicate that the system is highly sensitive and very strongly linked in a mechanistic man-
ner to higher-level physiological processes of protection, protein and cellular turnover,
and growth. The lysosomal system is probably a particular target for chemical pollution
as a result of its ability to accumulate a broad spectrum of environmental pollutants. The
possibility of lysosomal biomarker reactions having an interpretative capacity in terms of
ecosystem level effects is still tentative, but the current results are exciting.
