Festivals kick off all month, from millennium-old mystical seafaring celebrations to
freaky performance-art marathons.
Festa della Sensa
If Venice loves the sea so much, why don't they get married? Consider it done. Vows have
been professed annually since AD 1000 in the Sposalito del Mar (Wedding to the Sea),
with celebrations including regattas, outdoor markets and Mass on the Lido.
Festa di San Pietro di Castello
The Festival of St Peter of Castello (Festa de San Piero de Casteo in Venetian) takes place
the last week of June at the steps of the church that was once the city's cathedral, with
Mass, games, puppetry, hearty rustic fare and rock tribute bands.
Biennale di Venezia (Venice Biennale)
In odd years the Art Biennale usually runs June to November, and in even years the Archi-
tecture Biennale kicks off in September - but every summer, the Biennale also features
