Tipping
A 10% tip is customary at restaurants where a service charge is not included, and you can leave small change at cafes
and bars. Tipping water-taxi drivers is not common practice; hotel porters are tipped €1 per bag.
Opening Hours
The hours listed here are a general guide; individual establishments can vary, sometimes widely. Also note that hours at
shops, bars and restaurants can be somewhat flexible in Venice, as they are in the rest of Italy.
Banks 8.30am to 1.30pm and 3.30pm to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, though hours vary; some open Saturday mornings.
Restaurants Noon to 2.30pm and 7pm to 10pm.
Shops 10am to 1pm and 3.30pm to 7pm (or 4pm to 7.30pm) Monday to Saturday.
Supermarkets 9am to 7.30pm Monday to Saturday.

There are a couple of post offices in every Venetian sestiere , with addresses and hours online at www.poste.it . Conveni-
ent offices:
Post Office (Calle San Salvador 5106, San Marco; 8.30am-7.10pm Mon-Fri, to 12.35pm Sat) The main post office
branch in the historic centre with the longest opening hours.
Post Office (Calle Larga de l'Ascension 1241;
8.25am-1.25pm Mon-Fri, to 12.35pm Sat) Conveniently located
branch, just behind Piazza San Marco.
Public Holidays
For Venetians, as for most Italians, the main holiday periods are summer (July and especially August), the Christ-
mas-New Year period and Easter. Restaurants, shops and most other activity also grind to a halt around Ferragosto
(Feast of the Assumption; 15 August).
