In-Depth Information
Local trains that link Venice to the Veneto are frequent, reliable and remarkably inexpensive, including Padua
(Padova; €3.50, 30 to 50 minutes, three to four per hour), Verona (€7.40, 1¾ hours, three to four per hour) and points in
between. Faster intercity trains also serve these Veneto destinations, but the time saved may not be worth the 200% sur-
charge.
Train Stations
VENICE
When getting train tickets, be sure to specify
Venezia Santa Lucia
(VSL), for the station in central Venice, as opposed
to Venezia Mestre. The station has a rail-travel
information office
(
7am-9pm) opposite the APT office and a
de-
posito bagagli
(left luggage office;
041 78 55 31; Venezia Santa Lucia; per piece 1st 5hr €5, next 6hr €0.70, there-
after per hr €0.30;
6am-11pm) opposite platform 1.
MESTRE
On the mainland (which is a 10-minute train ride from Santa Lucia),
Venezia Mestre
station offers rail information, a
hotel-booking office and a
deposito bagagli
(
041 78 44 46; Venezia Mestre; per piece 1st 5hr €5, next 6hr €0.70,
thereafter per hr €0.30;
7am-11pm) . While many trains head all the way to Santa Lucia, some itineraries may re-
quire a change here.
To/From Venezia Santa Lucia
Vaporetti
connect Santa Lucia train station with all parts of Venice. See
Click here
for the most useful routes. There is
also a handy water-taxi stand just out front if you are heavily laden.
Tickets
Train tickets can be purchased at self-serve ticketing machines in the station, online at
www.trenitalia.it
, in the UK at
Rail Europe
(
www.raileurope.co.uk
)
or through travel agents.
Validate your ticket in the orange machines on station platforms before boarding your train. Failure to do so can result
in embarrassment and a hefty on-the-spot fine when the inspector checks tickets on the train.
Air
Most flights to Venice fly in to
Marco Polo airport
( 041 260 92 60;
www.veniceairport.it
; Viale Galileo Galilei
30/1, Tessera) , 12km outside Venice, east of Mestre. Ryanair and some other budget airlines also use
Treviso Airport
(TSF; 0422 31 51 11;
www.trevisoairport.it
;
Via Noalese 63) , 5km southwest of Treviso and a 30km, one-hour
drive from Venice.
Low-cost airlines are a benefit to travellers but a burden on the environment and Venice's air quality; to travel with a
cleaner conscience, consider a carbon-offset program.
To/From the Airport
MARCO POLO AIRPORT
There is a range of options for getting from the airport to the heart of Venice, including buses, water taxis and reliable
passenger ferry links.
