The Fragile Lagoon
White ibis perch on rock outcroppings, piles of lagoon crab are hauled into the Pes-
caria, and waters change like mood rings from teal blue to oxidised silver: life on the
lagoon is extraordinary, and extraordinarily fragile. Gazing across these waters to the
distant Adriatic horizon, the lagoon appears to be an extension of the sea. But with its
delicate balance of salty and fresh water, barene (mud banks) and grassy marshes, the
lagoon supports a unique aquaculture.
