In-Depth Information
poleon ruled Venice for only 11 years, French boulevards appeared where there were once
churches across the city. Among others, Sant'Angelo, San Basilio, Santa Croce, Santa
Maria Nova, Santa Marina, San Mattio, San Paterniano, San Severo, San Stin, Santa Tern-
ita and San Vito disappeared under Napoleon.
Venice's irst bridge to the mainland was built by the Austrians at Venetian taxpayers' expense in
1841-46, enabling troop and supplies transport by railway. The bridge spans 1.7 miles of lagoon waters
and is propped up by 222 arches. Explosives were originally planted under the piers to be detonated in
case of emergency, but these are said to have been quietly removed in later restorations.
