Barely a stone's throw from San Marco and less than five minutes from the San Zaccaria
vaporetto stop, this small, friendly hotel, opened in 2012, offers incredibly good value.
Arranged around a vine-clad central courtyard, rooms are understated and elegant with
wooden floors, Venetia Studium lamps, Fortuny-style fabrics, Sky TV and gleaming
marble bathrooms. Breakfast is similarly generous: a huge buffet loaded with cold cuts,
fruit and cakes, with eggs to order from the kitchen.

Even the nearby Bridge of Sighs can't dampen the high spirits of the sunny yellow Ca'
Dei Dogi, with guestroom windows sneaking peeks into the convent cloisters next door.
Streamlined, modern rooms look like ships' cabins, with tilted wood-beamed ceilings,
dressers that look like steamer trunks, and compact mosaic-covered bathrooms - ask for
the one with the terrace and Jacuzzi (€210).
Friendly staff can arrange concerts, free trips to Murano and sunset gondola rides. Book
well ahead.

Take part in your own period drama by checking into Casa Verardo. This family-run hotel
has just 23 rooms arranged around two spectacular period salons. Take breakfast on the
canal-side terrace and on summer afternoons seek refuge in the shade of the 16th-century
garden courtyard. Rooms vary considerably in size, and room 305 is the only one with a
private terrace. Off-season rates are good value for money.

Steps from Campo Santa Maria di Formosa, this neat-as-a-pin midrange option offers
comfortably equipped rooms with beautifully polished terrazzo (marble chips set in mor-
tar) floors, and 'traditional' Venetian designs. Smallish digs and no views, but it's good
value if comfort and location are your priority.
